Book Reviews: The Big Book of Super Hero Bedtime Stories and Girl Power Brain Boosters: latest Downtown Bookworks releases both stimulate the brain and prepare kids for sleepy-time.
Downtown Bookworks have created a wonderful line of kids books that impart helpful life lessons with the help of DC Comics characters, and they continue their winning streak with 2 new books: The Big Book of Super Hero Bedtime Stories and Girl Power Brain Boosters.
Bedtime Stories is a gorgeous deluxe book, full of vintage DC Comics art on glossy pages, and provides simple to follow and engaging tales of super heroes taking care of business before getting some shuteye.
My 3 year old daughter was particularly taken by a tale of Wonder Woman battling Poison Ivy before getting shuteye. She also enjoyed Superman saving the world before calling it a day, and Batman and Robin balancing their daily activities with nocturnal crime fighting before getting the nightly rest they need to fight another day.
The book is chock full of so many stories featuring various heroes, that any young comic fan will surely find their favorite hero to soothe them to sleep.
Girl Power Brain Boosters is the latest in a series of books aimed at budding young fan-girls and is full of empowering advice and fun puzzles to build confidence and encourage early academic development.
My daughter has enjoyed most of the exercises, although some are more advanced and aimed at older children. And I have to admit some brain teasers gave this 47-year-old father some challenges as well. It took me a while to determine the Wonder Woman who looks different from the duplicates as viewed above!
In addition to fun teasers, math challenges, mazes, and crossword puzzles, Brain Boosters stirs creativity, with several drawing and coloring exercises. It also includes multiple entries to encourage the reader to come up with their own stories to static comic book images.
With these latest releases, Downtown Bookworks have once again found that magic sweet spot between inspiring fandom at an early age and providing true substantive reading for growing minds.
