Book Review: ‘Superheroes Say Please’ by Morris Katz

Book Review: ‘Superheroes Say Please’ by Morris Katz: DC’s finest teach children about minding their p’s and q’s.

Sure superheroes like Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman may get in knockdown drag-out fights with super villains, but they never forget their manners. That’s the premise behind the delightful new children’s book Superheroes Say Please, the latest DC Comics related title to emerge from Downtown Bookworks.

The book, written by Morris Katz offers simple examples of proper etiquette, highlighted by classic DC artwork. This includes Superman and Batman exchanging pleasantries, Wonder Woman complimenting Shazam on his cape (he responds by saying he likes her lasso), and the Justice League making sure each member has enough birthday cake.

I particularly like the sly sense of humor in the book, such as when Batman and Robin make sure each has a turn spinning the Penguin on his umbrella, or Wonder Woman and Superman complimenting each other on how they took down Lex Luthor. A splash page of the Super Friends is another nice touch.

The book’s official description notes that Super Heroes Say Please is the only etiquette book your child will ask for again and again, and I can attest this is true. My daughter has enjoyed it thoroughly (she’s been a fan of all the Downtown Bookworks books and has also seen some classic DC cartoons).

I will say as a dad dealing with a daughter in her terrible twos, this book couldn’t have come at a better time. Exploring a fun way to learn your manners is a wonderful way to introduce proper etiquette without being too preachy or authoritative, and Super Heroes Say Please does the job with aplomb.
