Book Review: DC Comics ‘My Girl Power Journal’: Downtown Bookworks new interactive journal helps empower young girls inner superhero.

Downtown Bookworks have been on a roll with their excellent series of D.C. Comics related books for young children–in particular, those focused on young girls, which is both timely and extremely important. And their latest book is no exception.

Following closely on the heels of last years’ Color Me Powerful, My Girl Power Journal is something special: it’s part comic book/part diary, offering an interactive experience to fuel confidence and imagination.

The press release notes “Being a young girl is tough. You are bursting with creativity and emotions of all kinds,” says author Sarah Parvis. “Sometimes the healthiest, most empowering thing you can do is to spend a few minutes thinking about and expressing what makes you strong and unique and to envision yourself doing good in your community or in the world.

My Girl Power Journal helps focus on those thoughts by offering a host of activities, including pages to write down their goals and aspirations, as well as sections to draw their favorite superheroes (including themselves).

Tying it altogether are a bevy of gorgeous comic book art, featuring both iconic characters like Wonder Woman, Batgirl and Supergirl, and second-tier stars like Katana, Bumblebee and Hawkgirl.

In addition the book includes a treasure trove of DCU trivia, which should thrill comic geek parents (like myself) and ensure their children become comic book fans as well.

I have a toddler, and she has enjoyed pouring over the pages and learning the character’s names. Now that she’s beginning to be able to pronounce them, I can’t wait until she’s a few years older and can really benefit from the book’s inspirational text and find her own inner hero.
