Book Reviews: ‘DC Super Heroes: Super Hero Origin Stories’ and ‘DC Super Heroes: Little Library’-Downtown Bookworks latest publications bring big comic book action to little readers.

With the holidays fast approaching, parents are on the hunt for the must-have gifts this season. And for those with kids who love superheroes, Downtown Bookworks has the perfect gifts for young readers with some new editions in their DC Comics Super Heroes line of books.

First up is the DC Super Heroes: Little Library, which compiles a whole host of DC board books in an attractive package. The 8-book collection features previously published titles like Super Hero ABC, Even Super Heroes Sleep, Diversity is a Super Power, Super Hero Opposites and My First Book of Girl Power, all updated to feature a more diverse group of heroes, and published in smaller sizes to make for easier reading (and holding for smaller hands).

All 8 books teach important early concepts for learning, featured classic DC Comics art and cover a wide array of superheroes, reflecting DC Comics more diverse roster. Below are some samples from the Colors, Capes, Sizes and Shapes board book.

The books are aimed at pre-schoolers up to 3 years old, and I can verify from the earlier editions that my daughter (who is now 6), loved the books, engaging in the artwork and easily grasping the well-presented concepts. I think it has made her a DC fan for life, making this comic nerd dad swell with pride.

She particularly liked My First Book of Girl Power, which taught her lessons of empowerment and introduced her to characters like Wonder Woman, Nubia, and Black Canary.

In addition to that box set, Downtown Bookworks has a new book aimed at older readers: Super Hero Origin Stories. The book, aimed at readers three and up, features three-minute bedtime stories, each focusing on an origin of iconic Super Heroes, along with some deep-bench characters thrown in for good measure.

As you can see from the included screenshots, there is a wide array of super heroes presented in the book, covering the big three (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman), along with supporting characters like Green Arrow and Bumblebee.

It also included updated interpretations of characters like the Shazam family, which reflects their incarnations from the recent Shazam! film.

My daughter LOVES this book. Each night she gets to choose 2-3 heroes to read about, and she hangs on every word. She has always expressed interest in the bios of characters like Black Canary and Hawkgirl, so this collection has been a big hit with her, and I can imagine any young DC fan will await these bedtime stories with anticipation.

I always enjoy reviewing Downtown Bookworks DC Super Heroes line, because it showcases a group of characters that I love just as much as my daughter does, and it allows for some great bonding, while also boosting her reading skills and imagination, and these new releases don’t disappoint.
