Book Reviews: Downtown Bookworks’ DC Super Heroes Fall Releases: new slate of books teaches kindness, diversity and the ABC’s.

With school back in session, getting little ones comfortable with reading and learning life lessons is paramount, and if they also happen to be fans of DC Super Heroes, Downtown Bookworks has a whole host of new releases to help engage their reading comprehension, while also teaching them lessons about their ABC’s, good manners, diversity and inclusivity. 

So let’s dive into the new titles, all of which are available on Amazon, and can be purchased at the bottom of this review.

‘My First Book Of Girl Power’ by Julie Merberg

This revamped edition of this ever popular title has a more diverse selection of heroes than past editions. In addition to stalwarts like Wonder Woman and Batgirl, characters including Nubia, Jessica Cruz, and Bumblebee are now more prominent.

This helps further elevate the book’s emphasis on empowerment, with captions like “A super strong Amazon, Nubia knows that sisterhood makes women even more powerful.” It’s the perfect book to help foster inner confidence, poise and tolerance, while “Wonder Woman uses her Golden Lasso to get people to tell the truth” helps enforce the importance of honesty.

‘The Power of Kindness’ by Julie Merberg

The second title penned by Merberg, The Power Of Kindness focuses on using one’s strength and abilities to help others.

Captions like “When there is really hard work to be done, Superman and Supergirl always step up. It’s a good deed to help people in need”, or the panel featuring Batman and Robin below, all emphasize why doing good deeds is so beneficial and important.

‘Diversity Is A Superpower’ by Julie Merberg

Further emphasizing DC Comics and Downtown Bookworks’ commitment to diversity and inclusion, Diversity Is A Superpower focuses on showing tolerance and respect for others, and celebrating what both makes us unique while also finding common ground, featuring characters including Black Lightning, DC’s first black superhero, along with Aqualad and a host of other characters.

Using simple examples like “Starfire is orange. Super Heroes are lots of different colors”, or following up an image of Plastic Man with “Super Heroes Come in different shapes and sizes” is a fantastic way to impart these life lessons while also being entertaining.

‘Super Hero ABC’ by Morris Katz

The last title on our list is a fun way to encourage kids to learn the alphabet, featuring examples including “B for Black Lightning” or “T Is For Teamwork.” It’s a fun and engaging way to get young minds focused on nailing their A-Z’s.

All four of the titles feature a treasure trove of classic DC four color illustrations, bringing a nice vintage touch that will appeal to DC loving parents and draw in children who will be enthralled by the images.

My 5-year-old daughter loved all the books, and followed them all closely. She particularly loved the ABC book since she’s currently learning to read and identify sight words at school, and My First Book of Girl Power, as she loves learning about all the DC heroines.

All four of these titles are excellent for children, and would all make for great holiday presents, and are sure to be staples of bedtime reading between parent and child.
