Ty Segall ‘Fanny’ Single Review

Ty Segall ‘Fanny’ Single Review: vinyl edition of Freedom’s Goblin single’s proceeds to benefit animal rescue organizations

One of the highlights of Ty Segall’s 2018 release Freedom’s Goblin was Fanny, a touching ode to his pet dachshund of the same name.

Segall is following that release with a new 3-track vinyl EP (on Aagoo Records) of Fanny, featuring alternate takes on the track, including the original demo, a live acoustic version, and a “sketch” version, which is a more aggressive and rambunctious variation.

It’s to Segall’s credit that he doesn’t treat the subject material as a joke. There is a real sincerity to the song that honors that unspeakable bond between owner and pet, and this shines through all three versions included on the single.

The demo version underscores the trippy Beatles-esque nature of the tune, augmented by a bed of diffuse sound and impassioned vocals.

The acoustic version includes banter with the crowd, with Segall warning that “for anyone that thought this was an electric show, you were mistaken my friends,” before launching into a plaintive, unadorned rendition that loses none of its sentimental impact.

The “sketch” version is the most entertaining, somehow imbuing the mischievous and unfettered charm that only a dog can express.

Not only is the Fanny EP a fun listen, it’s also for a good cause. According to the press release: “all proceeds will go to the animal rescue organizations NKLA and Mighty Mutts, which are dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating the strays of Los Angeles and New York. It’s a tribute to our canine friends that only Segall could make.”

In other words, the sunny, feel-good nature of the Fanny single translates beyond feel-good vibes, and should make any animal loving Segall fan more than happy to purchase this enjoyable gem.
