Murphy recorded the album with Killing Joke bassist Youth (who also produced the new Echo & The Bunnymen album ‘Meteorites‘), and it’s heavy electronic feel references both Youth’s proto-industrial group and Murphy efforts like ‘Deep’, ‘Cascade’ and 2011’s ‘Ninth.’ But there definitely appears to be a heavy dose of swagger and angst that has been absent from his work from some time.
Murphy also spoke to Rolling Stone regarding ‘Lion’, saying that “It was a very fast process. It’s mostly due to the producer. I had nothing on the table except a sketch or two. So the producer, to coin a phrase, pushed me off the edge of the hill and I had to fly.”

He also stated that the new album will be trickier to pull off live than previous albums; “I’m practicing my head off at the moment. The songs are all in a high register — so now I have to learn to sing that way. I keep asking, ‘My God, how did I get that high? How do I get that high again, and how do I sustain it for an hour?”
Murphy also stated that the new tour would be relatively free of Bauhaus material, focusing firmly on his solo catalogue.

I’m hoping all this renewed vigor and focus remains for Murphy’s live persona and general health. I saw him on the ‘Ninth’ tour and he seemed disheveled, scattered and out of sorts. He was later arrested for meth possession, which likely explained that behavior.
