Rick Rubin Is Producing The Smashing Pumpkins Reunion Album: Billy Corgan reveals involvement of super-producer on forthcoming album.
It’s been a verrryyyyy long and winding road towards the reunion of the original Smashing Pumpkins. It’s been teased in drips and drabs for over three years now.
But recent weeks have proved that (a) yes, it’s still happening, and that (b) sadly, original bassist D’arcy Wrestky appears to not be involved (we know. we’re bummed too). *Or maybe she still is involved: she’s now claiming her account posting that statement was hacked.
That leaves three original members: Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin, all of whom were recently spotted in an L.A. studio together. And now we know that they’re recording their reunion album…with super producer Rick Rubin (who also produced Corgan’s 2017 solo album Oligala) on board.
Corgan revealed the news in a recent Instagram post regarding a health scare (which appears to be a bout with the flu), saying I share a window (curated as it is) into my crazy life. As an example, we are currently in the studio with Rick Rubin. But unless I show you a picture of Rick sitting Buddha-like at a mixing desk, you probably wouldn’t know that.”
Corgan shared a pic of their studio room, followed by a post from Chamberlin showing a shot of his drum set with the caption: “New studio – same rock power.”
Still no word on who’s playing bass, tour dates or other details, but looks like we’re getting new Pumpkins tunes in the near future. But, shit! It’s happening! And Rick Rubin is no slouch to making great records (for the most part).
As fas if it’ll be good or a step up from recent Pumpkins releases with Corgan as the sole original, we’ll just have to wait. IMPATIENTLY.
Or am I the only one excited about this? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
