PALMS EP Album Review (Ipecac)

Palms features members of metal band Isis and Deftones frontman Chino Moreno. Their debut EP is understated and hypnotic.

After such a strong album as 2012’s  Koi No Yokan (click here for my review of that album), it is impressive that Deftones frontman Chino Moreno continues his creative winning streak. This time it’s with Palms, a band he formed with members metal band Isis.

But there’s little metal to be found in their début album. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; this is an album rich in atmosphere and mood.

Fans of The Deftones lighter moments and Moreno’s mellower side project Team Sleep are going to be satiated with this release.

Future Warrior’s long intro of echoing guitar patterns has the epic portent The Cure. Mission Sunset come closest to Deftones territory, heavier in bombast, and ending with ethereal feedback squalls. Shortwave Radio’s bell-like guitar conjures the feel of 80’s post-punk mainstays like U2 and The Cocteau Twins, adding textures gradually before exploding in an oceanic wave of sonic bliss.

Moreno does his usual stream of consciousness bellowing, but continuing the more melodic vocals from Koi No Yokan. This comes into focus on Tropics, featuring breezy guitars and a hook-laden chorus with Moreno offering serene plain-spoken lyrics yet; Over the sand, into the light/Over the sea the waves gone by.

If there’s any fault with Palms,  it’s that the songs are all similar in feel. But with a sound this gorgeous, that is a small complaint. I have no idea how long of a shelf life Palms has, but they’re starting off strong. And this will tide over Deftones fans awaiting the eventual release of the long in the works Eros (featuring former bassist Chi Cheng who passed away earlier this year.)
