Original Smashing Pumpkins Lineup Reuniting?

Original Smashing Pumpkins Lineup Reuniting? Billy Corgan drops a possible cryptic hint.

As reported by Alternative Nation, Billy Corgan just released a Facebook video update that will surely have his fan base atwitter. Uncharacteristically subdued and jovial, he hinted at a few projects in the works including a new solo album: “I’ll give more details on in the near future, but it’s actually recorded, and sort of mostly done. So I don’t know when that will be coming out, but I recorded the album over 2 weeks in California. All new songs, so that’s pretty exciting.”

Things get more intriguing when he announced forming a new band with current Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroder and his recent live backing band: “Jeff and I are going to be starting a new band. I think I know what the name of the band is going to be, but I don’t want to say for sure yet. That was my James [Iha] impression (does James impression): ‘I don’t want to say for sure yet.”

The Iha bit sounds like foreshadowing: Corgan reunited with Iha for several dates on the Pumpkins acoustic Plainsong tour last Spring, but gave no indications if it was a one-off or something more permanent. But his vaguely cryptic final announcement will certainly fuel the rumor mill: “Speaking on Pumpkins, there’s some big stuff happening. We’re making plans. I can’t give that away but (scratches chin), it’s going to be interesting.”

Given Jimmy Chamberlain is back into the fold, and former bassist D’arcy Wretsky has recently expressed possible interest in returning to the band, and given Corgan’s huge sheepish grin before wrapping up the clip, we could be looking a full-blown band reunion. Is it a tour, new album, or both? Who knows, but it’s a much more fun prospect than hearing him spout conspiracy theories with Alex Jones or plugging his wrestling company (spoiler: he does mention that too.)
