Monster Magnet Announce New Album Cobras and Fire (The Mastermind Redux): Dave Wyndorf and co. give details on upcoming reissue and debut new track Mastermind ’69.
Earlier this year when I interviewed Monster Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf (click here to read the full interview) he mentioned an upcoming “re-imagining” of their 2010 album Mastermind.
And today band label Napalm Records announced the official title and release date. The disc, entitled Cobras and Fire (The Mastermind Redux), will hit record stores and online outlets on October 9th.
To mark the announcement, the band debuted the track Mastermind ’69 on Brooklyn Vegan

The remix of the original title track amps up the psychedelia and grooviness, in the same way that 2014’s Milking The Stars reinterpreted 2013 album Last Patrol in equally trippy, cosmic fashion.

When I spoke to Wyndorf in January, he discussed the concept for the band’s alternate take on Mastermind [box]It’s very strange (laughing). Like weird acoustic versions of songs that used to be super heavy. Turning things inside out. Not just like an unplugged situation, but truly odd….I seem to be searching for odd as we go on. Odd is interesting.[/box]
Wyndorf goes into more detail on Cobras and Fire with the official press release posted on Blabbermouth.
[box]I wanted to present these songs in a much stranger and dirtier atmosphere. Less ‘classic rock’ and more… well, I’d guess I’d call it a deranged fusion of garage-psych, fuzz punk and movie soundtrack music. It’s almost completely re-recorded…I’ve added organ, piano, sitars and more to flesh out a completely new sound for these tunes. There’s also a HAWKWIND/PINK FAIRIES-inspired cover version of THE TEMPTATIONS 1969 classic ‘Ball Of Confusion’…plus an eight-minute, tripped-out sonic adventure entitled ‘I Live Behind The Paradise Machine’ specially created by mixer extraordinaire Evil Joe Barresi. Joe…all in all, I call this the weirdest MONSTER MAGNET yet, and that’s a good thing! I hope you like it![/box]
Having thoroughly enjoyed Milking The Stars, I expect Cobras and Fire to rock in weird and wonderful ways, and likely more satisfying than the original release.
