Today is David Bowie’s Birthday. And the now 66-year-old rock legend decided to give rather than receive, releasing his first new song in 10 years.
The single Where Are You Now can be heard below, and in typical Bowie style, it has an odd video to accompany it.
UPDATE: video has been taken away from US sites due to copyright issues, but here’s another link to the song.
This is one of Bowie’s more reflective numbers, which is almost like a more loungey Space Oddity. If the rest of the album is as strong we may have a fine new release. Bowie’s albums are often hit or miss, but the expectations will be quite high given his absence. Long thought to be retired (he passed on a chance to sing at this summer’s London Olympics), this was certainly surprising.
Even more exciting for fans of The Thin White Duke, this song will accompany a forthcoming full length release , entitled The Next Day, which will be released in March. Below is the full track listing:
The Next Day:
1. The Next Day
2. Dirty Boys
3. The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
4. Love is Lost
5. Where Are We Now?
6. Valentine’s Day
7. If You Can See Me
8. I’d Rather Be High
9. Boss of Me
10. Dancing Out in Space
11. How Does the Grass Grow?
12. (You Will) Set the World on Fire
13. You Feel So Lonely You Could Die
14. Heat
Bonus tracks:
15. So She
16. I’ll Take You There
17. Plan
What is truly intriguing about the new album is the cover, which is essentially the cover to his album Heroes with his face removed. Here’s a link with the album’s designers explaining their audacious choice for the artwork.
According to the Guardian, there aren’t current plans for a tour or interviews, but given this recent surprise, perhaps this will ch-ch-ch-change as well. Sorry, couldn’t resist.
And anybody remember David Bowie in Tin Machine?
