Dave Grohl, Nine Inch Nails and QOTSA To Perform Grammy Finale

Dave Grohl, Nine Inch Nails and QOTSA To Perform Grammy Finale. Supergroup to be rounded out by Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsay Buckingham.

I’ve bemoaned the lack of heavy rock groups at the Grammy’s for years now.  But the 2014 Grammy ceremonies have a silver lining; Dave Grohl will lead a supergroup of alternative veterans, including Queens of The Stone Age and Nine Inch  Nails.

Rounding out the group will be classic rock mainstay Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac.

Grammy’s producer Ken Ehrlich made the announcement in Spin magazine, saying:

“We’re incredibly excited about this number. There’s nothing better than when the Grammys rock out, and to have these artists all together on one stage, doing a number that, when they presented it to us, knocked us out, is going to turn out to be one of those Grammy moments that people talk about for a long time.”

QOTSA, NIN, and Grohl all performed together on the soundtrack to Grohl’s excellent 2013 rock doc Sound City, and Grohl has performed with Queens of The Stone Age on a semi-regular basis, including their recent album …Like Clockwork.

Buckingham was mentioned in the film, but didn’t perform on it. But he collaborated with Trent Reznor on the recent Nine Inch Nails album Hesitation Marks.

All three albums are deservedly up for Grammys; Sound City Real To Reel soundtrack for best compilation, Like Clockwork for best rock performance (for single My God is The Sun), and best engineered album, and Hesitation Marks for best Alternative Rock Album.

Given the combined musicianship, and the otherwise anemic talent roster of a typical Grammy’s show, this looks to be a memorable, singular moment on an Awards show that has been eclipsed by disposable pop junk for far too long. Perhaps this will be a sea change moment, or simply an enjoyable one-off.

The Grammy’s airs this Sunday on CBS. Click here to see the full list of artists performing.
