Burning House ‘Mirror Song’ Review

Burning House ‘Mirror Song’: UK shoegaze trio fire on all all psychedelic cylinders on new single off forthcoming 2019 album.

If you were none the wiser, you’d swear that Mirror Song, the latest release for Burning House, was straight out of the late 80’s/early 90’s–a roaring mix of feedback and careening melody recalling vintage My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

The track, the first single off their forthcoming 2019 album Anthropocene, marries kaleidoscopic washes of distortion, melodic serene vocals and seismic drumrolls, all to disorienting and delightful effect.

According to the group’s press release, Mirror Song saw the group backed by backed by an
orchestra performing on shards of glass. I’m assuming this is a metaphor, but there’s so much sonic detail in this track, it could very well be true!

The UK group have a fully formed sound, which has fermented and developed since their formation in 2013. Their versatility is evident on the single’s B-side Peach, a garage rock ballad with shades of Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, and The La’s emanating through its fat buzzsaw barre chords.

Frontman/guitarist Aaron Mills voice was made for the group’s chosen sub-genre–a reedy androgynous instrument that nestles perfectly with the group’s dense atmospherics.

As a result, Mirror Song is the perfect Trojan Horse to whet feedback junkies appetites for the group’s full-length album. Until then, blast these gems at full volume and let your ears ring in bliss.

And head’s up My Bloody Valentine–if you’re truly planning on releasing a new album and touring next year, I think I’ve found your opening act.
