Book Review: ‘DC Super Hero Science’: latest Downtown Bookworks release exposes kids to science with the help of some super hero ambassadors.
Downtown Bookworks have released a slew of wonderful children’s books featuring DC Comics finest super heroes offering learning lessons on a bevy of topics that help teach important concepts to growing minds.
And with their latest release, ‘DC Super Hero Science‘ they have added another entertaining and educational tome to their arsenal.
The book, written by Jennifer Hackett, uses classic comic art and iconic heroes and villains to demonstrate different facets of science, and its also a fun and brisk read that will keep young readers engaged and inquisitive.
To make complex scientific concepts easier to understand, Hackett cleverly breaks the book into 7 topics: Physics, Animals, Waves, Powerful Bodies, Incredible Eyes, Engineering and Danger in Nature.
The animals section is one prominent example of how entertaining and engaging Hackett makes the material, showcasing the likes of Aquaman, Beast Boy, Hawkgirl and Krypto to explain concepts like how fish breathe underwater, how birds fly, and more.
The book also showcases classic DC character lore like Wonder Woman’s unbreakable lasso, Superman’s X-ray vision and the power of Kryptonite, exploring each from a scientific perspective.
It The book also includes a “scientist spotlight” for science-centric characters The Atom, Poison Ivy, and Bumble Bee, and describes how they integrate their knowledge into their superpowers.
What’s more, ‘Super Hero Science’ offers “experiments”, giving kids and parents a chance to interact and see real life scientific principals on a small scale. This make it easy for children to absorb and execute exercises like using slinky’s to replicate Black Canary’s sound waves.
While my three-year-old daughter is a bit too young to fully grasp all of these concepts, she loves the illustrations and hearing me read and break down the scientific aspects Hackett describes, and I can see how this will spark an interest in her to revisit the book when she’s older.
All in all, ‘DC Super Hero Science’ is entertaining enough to both expose kids to scientific concepts and to give older DC fans a fun refresher on important information on how the world operates around us. Downtown Bookworks remains the gold standard of integrating super heroes with super learning!
