Afghan Whigs Debut ‘Algiers’ Video

Afghan Whigs Debut ‘Algiers’ Video, Announce North American Tour Dates.

Last month, Ohio alternative legends The Afghan Whigs announced (by way of Breaking Bad’s Bob Odenkirk) the upcoming April release of Do To The Beast, their first new album in 16 years.

To whet fan’s appetites for the new album, today the band debuted Algiers, the first single and video for the album. You can watch it below:

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Band leader Greg Dulli explained that the song’s spaghetti western feel inspired the video, an homage to the Clint Eastwood classic High Plains Drifter

When I finished the song, I thought to myself, “This song kind of sounds like a spaghetti western.” It has that Sergio Leone vibe to it. Of the Man With No Name films that Clint Eastwood did with Leone, High Plains Drifter was always a favorite of mine, especially for the revenge angle that it explored. When you see it, it’s very clear who we’re saluting.

But sadly, the Afghan Whigs new album will be their first effort without original guitarist Rick McCollum. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Dulli discussed his departure; Rick’s personal problems got to the point where it wasn’t about music anymore…We wish him well, but until Rick confronts some very real things in his own life, I can’t play music with him.

In his place, there will be a variety of different guitarists featured on the album, including members of Chavez, Emeralds, along with Alain Johannes of Eleven and Queens Of The Stone Age (much of the recording took place at Josh Homme’s studio)

Do To The Beast will be released April 15th on Sub-Pop records. Here’s the official track listing:

01 “Parked Outside”
02 “Matamoros”
03 “It Kills”
04 “Algiers”
05 “Lost In The Woods”
06 “The Lottery”
07 “Can Rova”
08 “Royal Cream”
09 “I Am Fire”
10 “These Sticks”

The band also announced limited North American tour dates this spring. Let’s hope they expand their dates for a bigger tour later this year. As for myself, I’m digging the new tune and  have little doubt that Do To The Beast is going to be killer.
