I recently reviewed the awesome New Wave book ‘Mad World’, which prominently featured iconic 80’s group Duran Duran.

And now we have another excellent book regarding the influential group; Beautiful Colors: The Posters of Duran Duran. It’s a true passion project curated by dedicated fan Andy (aka Durandy) Golub. He’s amassed the largest collection of Duran Duran posters in the world, many of which were exhibited at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They’ve all been collected in this glossy compendium, featuring posters from each album and countless concert gigs from the band’s catalogue. This also includes side projects Power Station and Arcadia, and movie posters for ‘A View To A Kill’. Duran Duran keyboardist and band founder Nick Rhodes wrote the foreword.

Or as Golub stated  “From its conception down to the smallest details, Beautiful Colors was designed as a time capsule, containing memories that belong to the fans, as well as the band. While the book is certainly full of rarities to dazzle the eyes, Duran devotees will also find an abundant menu for the heart and mind: beloved concerts, favorite photos, and familiar milestones transport the reader back to cherished moments in Duran’s history, as well as their own.”

  1. 3 favorite songs: Reflex, A View to a Kill and Ordinary World. Ordinary World is probably one of my all time favorite songs period. I love Duran Duran because I saw them live twice just a few years ago and they still sound amazing. Even their new stuff rocks.

  2. I love Ordinary World, View to a Kill, and Wild Boys. Hard to choose just three favs! Listening to Duran Duran always gives me a great feeling of nostalgia and fun times.

  3. Naming just three favorite Dx2 tracks is too tough for me!

    1) Friends of Mine
    2) Sound of Thunder
    3) My Own Way
    4) Hold Back The Rain
    5) The Chauffeur

Duran Duran’s music was the ‘gateway drug’ to alternative music for me…you never forget your first, right?!? It’s because of them that I have such an appreciation of most music genres in my adult life. I remember most of the guys in school being “too cool” to admit to liking them, but I didn’t care, liking Dx2 got me in good with the girls (even though I was pretty much confused about my sexual orientation) and that ticked the guys off!

    • I totally agree about them being a gateway drug! They were one of those bands that as soon as you saw their videos, you knew everything in music/style was changing. I think that Duran Duran, INXS, Split Enz, and Billy Idol all sent me on way into finding more off-center stuff to listen to.

  4. New Religion
    Secret Oktober
The Chauffeur(altho it was hard narrow to only 3)
I haved loved this band for over 30 yrs cos they bring me happiness, they cheer me up,bring me to a comforting place. They have all kinds of songs for all kind of mood. After 10+ live shows, and after meeting them several times,DD feels like family.like old buddies 🙂

  5. 3favourite songs: Rio, Ordinary World, All you Need Is Now.
..and I love the band because Simon is still the best lyricist in the business, and DD continue to produce
    fantastic funky music.

  6. It’s so hard to pick just 3 songs. My favorite D2 song of all times is Save A Prayer. The next 2 would be Out of My Mind and Notorious. That was not easy! Duran Duran has been in my life for over 30 years. They saved me. Without their music I couldn’t have gotten through my brothers death. They are the only constant in my life. I can throw myself into their music and know everything will be ok. I just love and adore them to no end!

  7. My #1 choice is New Moon On Monday which has always been my favorite since the beginning(my username is almost everywhere “thistimelaluna”).
My #2 choice is Come Undone,a sexy song but at the same time it makes me cry.
My #3 choice is…the hardest.I guess it has to be Hold Back The Rain for its positive meaning and energy.
I’ve already bought this awesome book but I’ve given it to my boyfriend,a Duranie freak just like me.
Why do I love them??Cause they’re the soundtrack of my life, although I’m only 20 I feel a deep bond between these artist and me.’Cause I’ve met wonderful Duranies from all over the world who share the same everlasting love I feel for the Fab Four. And many other reasons!I collect everything I can find(and afford) related to them.
    DDLove from Italy xxx

  8. Union of the snake
    Save a Prayer
    The Chauffer

Been a fan since the 80’s and still listen to their music, new and old–i will always be a fan

  9. My three fav DD songs:
    Planet Earth
    New Religion
    Shadows on Your Side
I love the band because they were my first real obsession. Their look, their music, everything about them, most especially in the early 80s, impacted my life in the most profound way. Their music was the soundtrack of my youth.

  10. I love Duran Duran because they are my coming-of-age band — like so many of us in the U.S. I found them in the very early 1980s when their videos were making MTV’s reputation. I won’t forget the first time I heard and saw Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio, or Save a Prayer. I was hooked for good, and I wrote “novels” all through my teen years starring me and the band. I still think Rio is one of the best albums ever. It’s really perfect. And it’s been so gratifying through the years to witness their staying power!

Favorite songs. So hard to pick just three. I’ll say Rio, Careless Memories and Come Undone.

  11. toughie, but i would have to say Night Boat, Friends of Mine, and the Chauffeur. They’ve been my fav band all these years because they just ARE. its so hard to explain, but i think everyone here would say the same, the music, the videos, the bands willingness to embrace the fandom and be completely open and honest with us, and to share their lives and music with us.

  12. HI FELLOW DURANIE’S!, MY THREE FAVORITE SONG’S FROM THIS AWESOME BAND ARE ALL YOU NEED IS NOW, COME UNDONE AND SOMETHING I SHOULD NO?. THE FIRST SONG HAS GREAT IMPORTANCE FOR ME, FOR THIS SONG I PLAYED CONSTANTLY IN MY HEAD AND ON CD WHEN I HAD TO HAVE TO EMERGENCY SURGERIES, IT HAS A GREAT IMPACT ON WHAT I WENT THROUGH. THE SECOND ONE COME UNDONE, I CONSTANTLY PLAY AND STILL DO WHEN MY MOM DIED OF OVARIAN CANCER, SHE LOVED THAT SONG, HOW TRUE IT WAS BACK THEN AND HOW TRUE IT IS TILL THIS DAY.! THE THIRD ONE I REMEMBER FROM MY CHILDHOOD WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER IN HIGH SCHOOL, WHAT GREAT,SAD FUN, MEMORIES BACK THEN. I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF DURAN SINCE 1979, I WAS 10 I AM NOW 44.! I NEVER THOUGH THAT THEY WOULD BE STILL AROUND, AND THEY ARE, THE GREATEST BAND THAT I EVER GREW UP. THERE MUSIC IS VERY, SINCERE, FUNNY, AND WAY OUT THERE BEFORE OTHER BAND’S STARTED COPYING THEM WHICH IS REALLY SAD.! THEY ARE CONSTANTLY GENERATING NEW MUSIC AND I HAVE ALL WAY’S LOOK FORWARD TO BUYING THERE ALBUM, OOP’S EXCUSE ME, THERE CD, I AM SHOWING MY AGE. THERE WILL NEVER BE A BAND LIKE THIS EVER AGAIN. I KNOW EVERYONE IS GOING TO LAUGH, BUT; THAT IS OKAY MY NICK NAME FROM THE 80’S IS DURANQUEEN1! AND IT WILL ALL WAY’S REMAIN THE SAME.! DURAN/DURAN 4-EVER.!

  13. My three favorite Duran Duran songs are: Midnight Sun, Ordinary World, and The Chauffeur. And now to explain why I love this band. I wont lie in the beginning when I was a young school girl I was sold on the bands good looks and their overall image. I had the biggest crush on all the band members, mostly Simon and John, but as I got older my love for them evolved more for their songwriting abilities and fashion forward music videos. They have the coolest music videos featuring exotic locations and fashion models. Their videos are glamorous and I would daydream about having that kind of lifestyle as a little girl. I think their song lyrics are poetic and a different style than any other band. I have seen Duran Duran live in concert 11 times and I can tell you they are great performers and sound is amazing. Simon has great stage presence. John, Nick and Roger play instruments extremely well. They are seasoned performers who could probably play the set blindfolded. They have a strong fan following named “Duranies” which I am one for now going on 33 years. The shows are extremely fun. Everyone gets into the shows and sings and dance and people chant “Playing the F’n Bass John”. Everyone has the best time at a Duran Duran show. As Simon once best said “We want to be the band to dance to when the bomb drops.”
I have a few tour books from the shows I attended and would love to have the book with all the posters to add to my collection. I’ve always been impressed by the album covers and posters and I think they have great artistic abilities as artists.

  14. To the Shore
    Do you Believe in Shame
    Mediterranea

Duran’s music transcends time, the first album is just as relevant today as it was when it was released. I love the balance in their work….sensual, atmospheric and then at times just plain great to dance to. They also create amazing visual artwork as well, through film and live performance. No one else like them, never has been never will be! Brilliant!

  15. 1) New Moon on Monday was the first Duran Duran song I remember hearing and I was instantly hooked. Still my favorite; such a great song!
    2) Come Undone. It was such a beautiful new direction for the band. The beat and the whole feel are amazing.
    3) hard choice! So many great ones. I’ll go with Rio just because it’s so purely happy.

I can’t really remember life pre-Duran! I was about 6 years old in 1983 and my mom was checking out that “new music video channel.” The New Moon on Monday video came on and I was like “Wow! I like this! Who are these guys?” From then on, while my friends usually watched cartoons on Saturday mornings I watched MTV, especially on the lookout for D2 videos. Mom was even going to take me to see them for my first concert but there was a huge snowstorm in Cleveland that year and we couldn’t go. Since then, I’ve grown with the band, my life evolving as their music and roster evolved, always developing and learning. They’re part of who I am. Love!

  16. My three favorite songs are Friends of Mine, Hungry Like the Wolf and Come Undone.

There are so many others I could list. Simon is such a brilliant lyricist … a true poet. The music provided as the counterpart is equally brilliant. Their music has truly been the soundtrack of my life. Thank God for MTV! They brought them right into my living room and gradually their faces covered my bedroom walls. I love Duran Duran! One of my most cherished memories is my 1st Duran Duran concert when my Dad took me and 5 of my friends to LSU to see them on the Seven & the Ragged Tiger tour, February 14, 1984 for my 14th birthday. All these years later and 10 more concerts later they are still the GREATEST!

  17. Impossibly hard to name just three songs!
    1. Sound of Thunder
    2. Love Voodoo
    3. Too Bad You’re So Beautiful

Duran Duran’s music sends a bolt of life through me! It’s electric! Their songs give me chills and they light my imagination on fire…such beautiful and poetic lyrics! I have loved them since 1983 and enjoyed each album (the popular tracks and the unknown gems). They are simply THE band that makes me feel giddy and beautiful! Their music has been the soundtrack to my life. I love them!

  18. Top 3… Night Boat which always reminds me of my bestie growing up and spending the weekend at her house sick and watching the videos over and over and waking up every single time Simon screamed. Where ever we were you know D2 was as well.
#2 A View To a Kill. Same reason. The memories. The day it debuted sitting in front of my radio with the tape recorder just waiting to record this brand new song. And my bestie calling me every 10 minutes, you haven’t fallen asleep have you? You’re still ready to record right!?
#3 Ordinary World because it is hands down one of their best pieces of work. It’s such a beautiful little song that still sends shivers down my spine when I play it.
As you can see, Duran has been one of if not the biggest, portion of the soundtrack of my life. I’ve been there since the beginning and I will be there until the end. There aren’t a lot of 80s bands that were able to expand and grow into each new generation. But Duran is still out there kicking butt with the best of them. Listening to them always brings a smile to my face and a memory of a happy time in my life. For that alone they will always have my love and respect 🙂

  19. I Love All Duran Duran music but If I’m choosing I Really like their songs ‘ Save A Prayer’,’Careless Memories’ and ‘New Moon On Monday’!! I Love the band because me and my Two Besties in H.S. in the ’80’s Loved their music, music videos on MTV Asnd ‘Look’/Style!!! We even saw them in concert in Hartford,CT together!!So Much Fun,those days and times,Them and their music!!I’m a Duranie forever!!!

  20. 1. Hungry Like The Wolf
    2. Tel Aviv
    3. Point of No Return

It’s really hard only to choose 3 songs.

Duran Duran was my first and only favourite band ever- and they still are- and their music and their image influenced my life. I was only 12 years (’81) when I discovered DD, and since then I’ve stopped listening to them.

  21. My # 1 favorite song is Friend’s of Mine, #2 is Wild Boys, # 3 is (Reach Up for the) Sunrise
I have a 3 year old daughter and she just loves Sunrise, I get the widest smile on my face when I watch her dance to it.

Why do I love them? I have loved them for over 30 years. They were my 1st concert, 1st band I loved, 1st group where I had to have every album, every magazine, every book, even the board game.

They bring back such happy memories of my teenage years when life was so simple. I love the music, it is in my soul. I can’t imagine a time when I have not listened to their music.

  22. 1. Nightboat- This has always been my number one favorite. Its so 80’s horror like. but today has new meaning. I have a boat nd love to wake up early and watch the fog roll of the river. it reminds me of the video.

    2. Union of the Snake. Because I fell in love with videos that seem like a movie (which they hardly do anymore).

    3. the Reflex- Only because I love to watch the boys play live. My first concert was on the Astronaut Tour. Walking into the theater and feeling the exictment and the engery flowing. it was awesome and I still feel that at every concert.

  23. Top 3 Tunes:
Is There Something I Should Know?
    Secret Oktober
    Girls On Film
    Why I love them:
    Cutting edge fashion
    Fun, dance music
    Full, rich sound
    Handsome
    Strong personalities
My “coming of age” band that created the soundtrack of my youth!

  24. There are so many favorite Duran Duran songs…as a matter of fact, I love all of them!! But, if I have to pick 3 my 1st choice would be Save A Prayer because I just love lyrics and this is the tune as a teenager that I would listen to over and over to fall asleep every night. (I had a tape of just that song recorded over and over.) My second favorite would have to be Rio. Just a fun song and I loved that video! The third would have to be All You Need Is Now. I just loved the last album. That song just took me back to my teenage years and reminded me why I love them so much. They were my first music love and crushes. (I had JT on ceiling over my bed!) Just great music for my life….

  25. My three favorite songs (as of today at this moment) are Save A Prayer, The Man Who Stole A Leopard, and Planet Earth. Why do I love Duran Duran? Just look at the responses- so many great songs that almost no one has duplicated the others’ answers. These songs stand the test of time and provide Duranies with a soundtrack for our lives. The music, the style, the artistry, each individual contributing their own unique talent to make the sum greater than the parts.

  26. Top three songs? In no order: Union of the Snake, Wild Boys and Come Undone.
I first started liking Duran Duran because all the girls liked them, and that was my “in”. But almost immediately I started really getting into them. Finally got to see them 10 years ago live, and it was completely worth it.

  27. Girls on film
    Rio
    The reflex

I love duran duran so much they have been part of my life for as long as i can remember – i have known them longer than my best friend, longer than my husband and obviously longer than my children. However all these people who i love dearly have come to know all of duran duran and their songs and they all know that duran duran are my first love xxxxxxxxxxxx

  28. I can’t choose three favourite songs, I’ll say only three of their most beautiful songs: “Planet Earth”, “Save a prayer” and “The wild boys”.
“Planet Earth” has a very dark text, but its rhytm is animated. Certainly one of my favourite.
“Save a prayer” is a mix of emotions: slow rhytm, very sad, a song that is usually sang in unpleasant events, but the text isn’t about death. It’s incredible how a song can make you sad with its music. I love the video and I think it’s one of the best videos of Duran Duran.
At last, “The wild boys” is like “Planet Earth”: dark but very amazing. It’s actually the first Duran’s song that I’ve ever heard, and I love it. The video is my favourite since the first time I saw it.
I’m very young: I wasn’t born when Duran were formed, I wasn’t born when they released their best album “Rio”, I wasn’t born when they were at the top of the success… but in my (short) life I never found a band that could shock me, in positive sense. When I listened to a Duran’s song for the first time, I thought “Hey, this is THE band, this guys are the best”. They have everything: powerful music, beautiful texts, an amazing style, fantastic musicians and a singer with a wonderful voice.
They’re the soundtrack of my days, they help me when I’m sad or I’m lone. They’re the answer for everything.

  29. Favorite songs: Union of the Snake, Girls on Film, cover of White Lines
I’ve adored them since elementary school and I never could choose an allegiance to just one member. Simon’s lyrics and their early videos were incredibly foundational to my aesthetic sense. On my coffee table right now are Neil Gaiman’s book about the as well as a Nagel book, which they introduced me to. And they make the best music to dance to!

  30. Favorite songs: “Anyone Out There?”, “Planet Earth”, and “Notorious”. Why do I love the band? Because they’re the greatest band on Earth!

  31. I love Duran Duran for many reasons…..my threes favorite songs which is EXTREMELY difficult to choose are Save a Prayer, Come Undone and Secret Oktober.

Duran Duran mean to me, what is beautiful about this world, whether you are having a good or bad day you listen to one of their songs and you are uplifted and rejoiced by just hearing them. Duran Duran are iconic to me and all of us, they have created memories that last forever for me some of the greatest of my life. I cannot imagine life without their music, creativity and brilliance.

You have to experience them to truly see THE MAGIC that is DURAN DURAN.

  32. My three favorite Duran Duran songs:

) Hungry Like the Wolf {this song started it for me},
    2) Wild Boys {crazy beat AND video},
    3) White Lines {Duran Duran ROCKED this song out!!!}

Duran Duran ARE the music of my youth!!! MANY happy memories! I was in England when Duran Duran tickets went on sale and I had to call my friend in the States to get me tickets. PURE HAPPINESS!!!

  33. My version of Planet Earth – with favourite songs highlighted throughout:

(sing to the music of ‘Planet Earth’)

I was just 13 when I heard a song called ‘Planet Earth’
It was pure magic to my mind
Like, the words and pictures playing in a brand new time
I think I just knew what I’d find

From then, I was obsessed, a true fan for life,
‘Rio’ to ‘Come Undone’, and the Number Ones,
D-D’s champion, a-l-w-a-y-s been the champions
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop D-D’s champion

I saw them playing live way back in
    1983, Adelaide, Memorial Drive
A ‘New Religion’ for me has stayed right through my life
And kept me in and out of strife

From then, I was obsessed, a true fan for life,
‘Rio’ to ‘Come Undone’, and the Number Ones,
D-D’s champion, a-l-w-a-y-s been the champions

Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop
    D-D’s champion
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop
    They’re always champions
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop
They’ve always been my number one
Bop bop bop bop bop bop bop bop
    D-D’s champion

    • Hey Matthew, I too was at the drive when Duran Duran rocked it. An unbelievable gig indeed, also changed my life. I Was wondering do you have any photos ? Would love to see any if you do.

  34. New Religion
    Lonely In Your Nightmare
    Secret Oktober
Simon’s quirky lyrics, John’s funky bass lines, Andy’s dynamic guitar riffs, Nick’s slinky finger plinks, Roger’s thumping drum smashes. The songs, the looks and the memories. That is why 🙂

  35. All of Duran’s songs are fantastic, but if I must choose 3, let it be:

    1. Save A Prayer

    2. Careless Memories

    3. Secret Oktober

Why I Love Duran Duran? So many reasons, but, to summarize:

I have been a fan of DD since 82′ thru today. Their music is very much a part of me. I spent my teen years as a hardcore Duranie. Listening to, watching videos of, hanging posters of, buying merch for, and singing and talking about, Duran Duran. I continued to follow and adore them throughout my adulthood. DD’s songs have always been my “Happy” music. Whenever I am sad or upset, I put on some Duran and I always feel better. There has been NO other music that does this for me! They are an awesome live band, who can actually play their own music and write their own lyrics. They look and sound as great today as they did back in the day. Can’t wait to see them on tour again. I have only one thing on my bucket list- to meet Duran Duran. After that, I can happily go on to the next life.

  36. Like An Angel
    Salt in the Rainbow
    Lonely in Your Nightmare

My love for Duran Duran is cosmic and eternal. I’ve been a fan since I was eight years old, and I’ll love them till the end. They’re like home to me. The songs, the unique style, the words and the connections are what keeps me coming back, Breath After Breath.
The friendships I’ve made with likeminded souls because of this band I’ll always treasure. They truly are special, beyond words.

  37. Top 3 songs:

    1. New Religion.

    2. Electric Barbarella.

    3. Too Close To The Sun.

Over 30 years in the music business – they’ve had a long and diverse career. Many line up changes, many highs and lows. I guess this is what makes them interesting for me, and why I love them very much. Keep rockin’ Duran Duran.

  38. My three favorite Duran Duran songs are:

“Is There Something I Should Know?”

    “Nice”

    “Notorious”

My love for Duran Duran started out innocently enough as a pre-teen infatuation for five gorgeous blokes from Britain–especially lead singer, Simon LeBon. I particularly loved the fashionable style and exotic locations of their groundbreaking music videos–it was pure candy for both the eyes and ears! As I got older and (sort of) matured, my fascination with their “pin-up boy” good looks eventually gave way to enormous admiration and respect for the cutting-edge, skilled songwriters and musicians that they were (and still are). Absolutely nothing comes close to that signature Duran Duran “sound” and some thirty-plus years on, that sound continues to endure as it influences legions of current bands. When I see how relevant DD has remained in today’s challenging musical landscape, it makes me extremely proud to have stayed a true-blue “Durannie” all these years…and I’m still in love!

  39. I’ve had a lot of fun reading everyone’s passionate and excellent responses! And so glad my fave song ‘The Chauffeur’ got so many shout outs. Random winner to be contacted via email shortly :-).

      • Pam, there were SO many good responses that I could only use one scientific method to determine a winner; I drew a name out of a hat! Congrats to Robyn! Thanks for all who entered, commented and showed their passion for Duran Duran. And for those still dying to get their hands on the book, you can do so via the Amazon link before the comments section 🙂
