Smashing Pumpkins Announce 2 New Albums For 2015

Smashing Pumpkins Announce 2 New Albums For 2015: Billy Corgan adds lots of nebulous terminology for dramatic effect on band’s new website.

Okay, so yesterday was supposed to be the BIG news about the future of the Smashing Pumpkins. Well Monday came and went with nary a peep from Billy Corgan.

But today, news did come, and while it’s not earth shattering (no original lineup reunion. Sorry), it’s still noteworthy; Smashing Pumpkins will be putting out two new albums in 2015. He announced the news via the band’s official website, which has been changed to smashingpumpkinsnexus.com:

Pleased to announce that I’ve just inked a new record deal with BMG that will see the release of two Smashing Pumpkins albums in 2015; titled successively: ‘Monuments To An Elegy’ and ‘Day For Night.’ For those interested in sound, think: ‘guitars, guitars, guitars, and more guitars;’ but more so on the epic side of things than say, grossly metallic. Recording sessions begin today, as plenty of songs have been written and ready to go. Manning the boards will be producer Howard Willing, with whom I first had the pleasure of working with during the ‘Adore’ sessions. We expect a single out by year’s end.

Additionally, this stands as the initial post on a new nexus: The Panopticon, which through its simplicity should better address the speed of modern life. A continuing feature, items regarding each day’s recording will be shared that same evening, with song titles, lyrics, poetic impressions, pictures, sound clips, studio gear and the like offered for a circuitous, bird’s eye view of the process as it unfolds.

So not one, but two new SP albums for 2015. As daunting as that may seem from any artist, Corgan is a prolific dude, releasing twice as much music in his 90’s heyday as his contemporaries. Just releasing their classic double album ‘Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness’ itself, is all the proof you need that he could bring the goods.

But there’s also the reality that Corgan’s latter-day output will never reach those 90’s heights. I thought ‘Oceania’ was quite good, but his other output has been spotty. And his grandiose overtures can sometimes fall on deaf ears (8 hour jam based on ‘Siddhartha’ anyone?)

And of course, it just ain’t the same without the original lineup. But I’ll always keep an open mind. Here’s to hoping that  ‘Monuments To An Elegy’ and ‘Day For Night’ err on the side of greatness or at least okay-ness.

But until then, we have the ‘Adore’ reissue to look forward too, and I’m stoked to hear all the rarities and B-sides from that underrated treasure.

So what do you make of the new Smashing Pumpkins announcement? Excited? Annoyed? Zzz? More intrigued by Corgan’s odd dabbling in professional wrestling? Discuss below.
