Portishead’s Beth Gibbons Covers Black Sabbath

Watch video of Portishead’s Beth Gibbons Black Sabbath covering Black Sabbath, aka ‘Black Sabbeth’ with UK metal band Gonga

In totally out-of-left-field yet completely awesome news, Portishead vocalist Beth Gibbons has collaborated with metal band Gonga. They’ve done a cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘Black Sabbath’ and it sounds sensually evil.

It’s been criminally long since we’ve heard any new Portishead material (as is their perennial M.O.) so this is a pleasant surprise. Gonga are a UK instrumental act that are like a metal Mogwai, so turning vocal duties over to Gibbons is a stroke of genius. They’ve fittingly renamed the track ‘Black Sabbeth.’

Gibbons, no stranger to dark material, proves perfectly fitting to the metal classic, her impassioned tortured wail giving Ozzy a run for his money. Personally, I’d love to hear her take on other metal classics after this.

They’ve released a video for the track which takes footage from Mario Bava’s horror film ‘Black Sabbath’, which is where the original band borrowed their moniker. No word yet on an official release date for the album, or if this is simply a one-off project.

So check out the ‘Black Sabbeth’  music video below, courtesy of Stereogum and tells us your thoughts? And I’ll keep my fingers crossed that Portishead have another album left in them, given 2008’s ‘Third’ was quite excellent.
