Owl ‘Things You Can’t See’ Review

Owl ‘Things You Can’t See’ Review: power trio blasts through six incendiary tracks on their new EP.

[rating=4]

Vocalist/Bassist Chris Wyse is quite the rock journeyman: he’s played with everyone from Metallica to Ozzy Osborne, and just wrapped up a 10-year stint with The Cult (not to mention his current gig playing with Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley).

But Wyse’s passion project lies with his three-piece Owl, who will release their third studio album, Things You Can’t See on July 28th.

The six-song EP draws upon all of Wyse’s prior musical experience, crossing the boundaries of alternative, classic rock and metal.

The self-titled opening track kicks off with a swinging blues-rock swagger, eventually building into an arena rock chorus before culminating with a slamming metal outro.

Lake Ego has a slow burn intensity, with Wyse’s ominous vocals recalling Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley.

Wyse keeps his 4-string skills a focal point throughout, with a pulsating groove emanating on the anthemic Who’s Going To Save You Now, and treating it with copious wah-wah on the 70’s glam-flavored Star Me, augmented by drummer Dan Dinsmore’s militant percussion.

Guitarist Jason Achilles Mezilis compliments Wyse’s bass style ably, and the trio’s highlight is Witch’s Familiar, which kick off with an eerie Goth piano and bowed bass before going into a sleaze-rock chorus, with Wyse’s vocals running the gamut from crooning to shrieking.

Things You Can’t See is short but sweet, showcasing a power trio who have a knack for big sonic hooks while also showing off their muscular musicianship. They scratch a musical itch for heavy, melodic rock that’s in short supply these days. Things you can’t see, maybe…but something that should definitely be heard.
