Listen To New Chelsea Wolfe Song Iron Moon

Moody chanteuse Chelsea Wolfe is set to release her new album Abyss on August 7th, and she’s giving listeners a taste for what’s in store with the first single Iron Moon, which you can listen to via Soundcloud below:

The track pulls on all the previous strengths from 2013 album Pain Is Beauty, but amps up the heaviness, in a sound collage equal parts dream-pop and doom metal, and her distorted vocals recall the tortured wail of Portishead’s Beth Gibbons.

Wolfe told Rolling Stone that the overall vibe of Abyss is “the feeling of when you’re dreaming, and you briefly wake up, but then fall back asleep into the same dream, diving quickly into your own subconscious.”

And Iron Moon’s dark mood is matched by its lyrical content: it was inspired by the poetry of Xu Lizhi, a migrant worker for the Chinese company Foxxcon who recently took his own life: “There’s a blurry confusion throughout the lyrics on the album, as it sometimes is in dreams, like you’re new to the afterlife and things are slightly different, more hazy and fluid.”

Abyss was recorded in Dallas with producer John Congelton (Swans), and featured bandmates Ben Chisholm and drummer Dylan Fujioka, along with viola player Ezra Buchla and Russian Circles’ guitarist Mike Sullivan on guitar.

I was beyond impressed when I caught Wolfe’s set opening for Queens of the Stone Age last year, so I can’t wait to hear the full-length.
