Aphex Twin Announces New Album ‘SYRO’

Aphex Twin Announces New Album ‘SYRO’: Eccentric electronic music pioneer announces first new album in 13 years.

The hint of new Aphex Twin material was hanging in the air, literally over the weekend. A blimp bearing the eccentric electronic music pioneer’s logo was seen flying over London. The blimp also bore the dates 2014.

His logo also appeared outside NYC’s Radio City Music Hall, and outside the Soho Apple Store, as well as a few other locations.

And today the artist (who’s real name is Richard D. James) made the news official in his own eccentric, oddball style.

He announced his upcoming new album via the deep web. For the uninitiated, that translates to using a web browser called Tor, which isn’t found through regular search engines. For easier access, he tweeted the link as well.

The first thing that pops up is a distorted image of James himself, which has become one of his trademarks:

The album will be called SYRO, and it’s his first new release in thirteen years (the last being 2001’s Drukqs). Here’s a screenshot of the announcement including the track listing.

This announcement follows fairly hot on the heels of the crowd funded release of Caustic Window. That album was originally recorded in 1994, but never released for nebulous reasons.

2014 has also seen the 20th anniversary of Aphex Twin’s hugely influential album Selected Ambient Works Volume II.

No word on a street date or tour dates, music videos or any other details, but except more cryptic announcements up until the album’s official release date. We’ll keep you posted as details become clearer.

  1. The album will be called SYRO, and it’s his first new release in sixteen years (the last being 2001′s Drukqs). Here’s a screenshot of the announcement including the track listing.

That would be 13 years, not 16.
